Effect of long term exercise on maintaining lean muscle mass

In a new study published in The Physician and Sportsmedicine, researchers evaluated  whether high levels of chronic exercise prevented the loss of lean muscle and strength commonly experienced in sedentary aging adults. The study looked at 40 high level recreational athletes aged 40 to 81. A picture is worth a thousand words, so take a look for yourself at the thigh cross sections and see the amazing   differences consistent exercise can make in helping you maintain lean mass.

In the first picture, you can see the thigh in a 40 year old triathlete. The dark tissue shows the lean tissue with a thin layer of adipose tissue and the skin surrounding it.

The second picture shows a  74 year old sedentary male.
Now compare that picture to the final picture of the thigh of a 74 year old triathlete.




Amazing to see the difference in fat mass versus lean tissue. If you look closely, you can even see the thickness of the femur is as good in the 74 year old triathlete as it is in the 40 year old!   This should inspire you to keep your body moving and keep from becoming sedentary as you get older.
